Love In The Ice - Chapter 19

Chapter 19: Why?

Jaejoong (wearily): *YAWN*

Jaejoong woke up and without even opening his eyes, he turned over on the bed and leaned forward, wanting to plant a kiss on Jaein's lips, like he always did when they were in Singapore to wake her up. But he realised that Jaein was not in bed like usual. He opened his eyes and searched the hotel room. She was no where to be found.

Jaejoong: Jaeinnie... eodiseo? (where are you?)

There was no response. He got up and went towards the toilet. The only place where she could be. It was empty. He looked for his handphone and dialled her number. There was no response too.

He started getting dressed while continuing to call her. Then he noticed something on the dresser. He went over and held it up.

There was "To: Jaejoong" written on it. He opened it up, written in Jaein's handwriting was the text below...

Dear Jaejoong,
It was a pleasure to finally meet your parents. And they were indeed wonderful parents... For someone as perfect as you.

I value kinship more than anything in the world. So I don't wish to be the source of any discord in your family. I hope that you'd listen to your parents and respect their wishes. They are after all your parents, and you owe them your very existence.

Just let me be a part of the distant past for you, and go forth and look for someone better, and more suitable for you.

Wishing you the best in your future endeavours.

Love,
Jaein

6 years later...

A group of kindergarten kids were playing in the nearby playground while waiting for their parents to fetch them home, and some parents were bringing their kids home.

Jaejoong had already graduated and started working as CEO in his parents' company for the past year. Their company was expanding their businesses to Japan and Jaejoong was sent there to negotiate the business plans. He had just finished another long and tiring meeting and decided to take a slow stroll in the nearby park before going for dinner and retiring for the day.

Jaejoong was sitting on a bench and staring at his handphone at the only photo he took together with Jaein in Singapore. He had always wanted to take photos with Jaein when they were together to record the moments they shared together, but she was always reluctant to do so. As secretly deep down, she always felt that she looked too plain beside him, and it made the photos look bad. This photo was the only one he managed as she just woke up when he snapped it in bed with her in his arms. He was planting a kiss on her cheeks, when she awoke smiling at him. His eyes slightly melancholic, as his finger rubbed across Jaein's smiling face gently.

He had never forgotten her. How could he forget his first love so easily? He had opened his heart out to her and her alone. No one else could replace her or refill the emptiness she left in his heart. And no matter what his parents did to try to matchmake him with other girls of equal standing with him. He took no interest in them. He could not even make himself like them. At all. They were too spoilt and plastic, or too clingy and bimbo-tic. They were nowhere close to what Jaein was like.

Jaejoong: Mianeyo... I didn't listen to you... I'm still...

A ball rolled over to Jaejoong's feet and he picked it up. A small boy ran over to him shortly after.

Little boy (speaking fluently in Japanese): Sorry uncle, I hope my ball didn't cause you any trouble...

Jaejoong (replying in Japanese): No... it didn't... Don't worry...

Little boy: Mummy says I'm not supposed to talk to strangers... But you seem like a nice uncle... So... I guess it's ok...

Jaejoong looked at the boy and noticed he reminded him so much of himself. Jaejoong looked over to the playground and noticed that all of the kids were gone now.

Jaejoong: Where's your parents? They are not here to pick you up yet?

Little boy (smiling): I'm usually the last to leave... But Mummy will be here shortly... So don't worry about me... What about you, Uncle? You're not going home for dinner with your wife yet?

Jaejoong (a bit surprised by the little boy's reply): I'm leaving soon... But I don't have a wife... So there's no dinner for me at home... I'll eat outside before going home...

Little boy (thinking): Hmm.... but Uncle is so handsome... How come you don't have a wife yet?

Jaejoong (laughing slightly at the boy's matured mind): Cos the person I love is missing now... So before I find her... I can't marry...

Little boy (patting Jaejoong on his arm): Don't worry Uncle... You'll find her soon...

He looked at his watch and noted that it's time to go.

Little boy: Sorry Uncle... I have to go now... Mummy will be coming soon...

Jaejoong: Ah.... Go ahead then... Don't make your mummy worried...

Little boy: I know... You don't forget to have a nice dinner first.... Bye...

The little boy ran off towards the nearby kindergarten. Jaejoong was curious to know how his mummy looks like as he looked so much like himself. So he followed at a safe distance behind. A lady was just closing up the kindergarten, with her back facing the gate. The boy ran into the kindergarten, calling out for his mummy. And she turned around and squatted down, so that he ran straight into the arms of his mummy, and gave her a kiss on her cheeks.

Jaejoong's briefcase dropped onto the floor with a thud. His eyes stared hard and blankly at the scene before him. Standing at a safe distance from him, was the person that he had been searching high and low for so many years. But he could no longer make her his wife anymore. She was already the boy's mummy. Jaejoong was devastated.

His eyes stared at the mother and child as they walked out of the kindergarten. He followed them until they reached their apartment block. He waited downstairs and paid attention till they emerged from the lift and entered their apartment. He noted down the name of the kindergarten and the address before leaving.

The next day he engaged a private investigator to look further into this as he wanted to know what happened in the 6 years that they were apart, to make her marry another man and have his kid. But the most disturbing fact was that despite the boy having inherited Jaein's inquisite, straight-forward, and helpful personality, he looked so much like Jaejoong...

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
A week later...
Jaejoong went everyday to the same park hoping to catch a glimpse of the little boy as well as to get more information from him. And he was lucky, cos he managed to catch him everyday. And the little boy was soon becoming closer to Jaejoong. But he was a very careful boy (probably due to training from his mummy), so he didn't say too much about his own personal information to Jaejoong. From the boy, Jaejoong only got to know that he was 5 years old.
However, from the private investigator, Jaejoong got to know that Jaein was working at the kindergarten as an English teacher. And the boy studies there too. The boy was born in Japan, and his name is Jun Injoong. And they stay in a small rented apartment near to the kindergarten. There was no information however, on the boy's dad.
Jaejoong got even more curious. With a name like Injoong, and a face that looks like him, Jaejoong couldn't help but suspect that the boy is actually his son. But how did it happen? And why did she choose to not let him know?
