Valentine's Day.

A day where all the lovers in the world were celebrating their love.

The day where Joong would marry Yuki.

It was also Ze's death anniversary.

Jae had gone over to Joong's house the day before to congratulate his parents, and since Joong had gone out to see to last minute preparations. He didn't meet her. She left a red packet and wedding gift for them. And informed his parents that she couldn't attend his wedding, cos it was Ze's death anniversary.

Joong's mum: WHAT?!!! Ze's death anniversary?!!!

Jae: Ne... ajumma... I need to visit his grave... I don't think it would be appropriate for me to attend Joong's wedding... Joesong hamnida...

Joong's mum: Jae... my child... why didn't you tell us earlier? About Ze? We never asked his halmuhni why Ze and his dad didn't come stay with you too, cos we didn't want to appear too nosy... Now I know it's cos they have both passed away in the war...

Jae: Joesong hamnida ajumma... I didn't want you guys to feel depressed over the news... Since you've got a wedding in preparation... Anyway, please tell Joongie and Yuki that I'm sorry... But I'll give them a treat when they come back from their honeymoon to make up for it...

Joong's mum: Jae...

Jae (interrupting her): Ajumma... I gotta go to work now... Congratulations again... Annyeonghi kyesayo...

Jae dashed out of Joong's house, running away from the house as fast as possible. She was hurting inside so much.

Why did he have to choose to wed on the same day Ze died? It was like having the two men she loved leave her on the same day... It broke her heart into a million pieces... But she still had to put on a happy front to face the elders... Even though she was breaking down inside... She cried herself to sleep every night after she received Joong's wedding invitation card...

14th February...

To the world it was a day to celebrate love...

But to her... It was the day destiny took away from her the two men that she loved the most in the world... The skies could not be any darker or gloomier for her...

It was a stormy day on the day of Joong's wedding. Fortunately for him, the wedding was held indoors, so everything could still go on. But he had not seen Jae the entire day. He was wondering where she was. In fact, he had not seen her for a very long time...

They never met since he returned, apart from that first day...

He had been busy with his wedding preparations and work. And she had been working day and night at the hospital, he had heard from his mum. And he knew from his mum that Ze's halmuhni had moved to stay with Jae. But there was no mention of Ze. Joong didn't understand why, but he didn't probe.

His guests had all arrived at the location. But he still didn't see Jae.

Joong's mum: Joongie-ya... You should head on in... It looks like it's going to rain soon...

Joong: Omma... Has Jae-nuna and Ze-hyung arrived yet? I haven't seen them yet... But I remembered seeing Ze-hyung's halmuhni...

Joong's mum (thinking back over what she had said): Oh... It's Ze's death anniversary today...

Joong (eyes wide open): WHAT!!!??? ZE-HYUNG'S DEAD?!!!!

Joong's mum: Yeah... He died at her camp, while trying to protect her from an escaped prisoner-of-war...

Joong ran off before his mum could finish what she was saying.

Joong's mum (screaming): JOONGIE!!! WHERE ARE YOU GOING??!!!!! WHAT ABOUT YOUR WEDDING WITH YUKI??!!!!

Joong (screaming back): OMMA!!! TELL YUKI MIANHAMNIDA... I CAN'T MARRY HER!!! I LOVE SOMEONE ELSE TOO MUCH!!!

Joong's mum (shaking her head): This child...

At Ze's grave...

It was already raining. Jae was standing at his grave looking down at the inscriptions.

"My beloved husband Ze
Saranghamnida yongwoonhi
Your wife Jae"

Jae put away the umbrella and sat down beside Ze's tombstone, leaning against it and hugging it like before. The rain beat down mercilessly on her.

Jae's thoughts: It's good that it's raining... At least it can hide my tears...

Jae: Ze... One year... And you've not even met me once in my dreams... Do you really not love me anymore? I said I'll be yours forever right? I'm keeping my promise... Why won't you see me at all? I missed you so much...

Jae caressed the tombstone lovingly.

Jae: Appa and omma won't meet me... You won't meet me... Do all of you not love me anymore? Or you don't remember me anymore cos you're having so much fun up there? If it's really so nice, why won't you take me with you? I don't want to stay here alone anymore... I miss all of you too much...

Jae sobbed uncontrollably, shivering in the cold, as the rain hit mercilessly onto her shivering body, and the wind pushed her heartlessly to and forth.

Jae: Joesong hamnida halmuhni... I know I promised to take care of you... But I don't think I can do so much longer... My heart is already dead, I don't think my physical body can take anymore of this heartache... I just wish to be with appa, omma and Ze... Forgive me...

The wind blew Jae's umbrella away.

Jae: Ze... I promised that my heart will stay yours forever... I know I shouldn't be sad about Joong's wedding... He found happiness right? I should be happy for him... Now I want my happiness too... I'm coming to see you now...

She took out a bottle of sleeping pills and started taking them.

Joong scanned the cemetery for Jae. He found her leaning against Ze's tombstone. He ran towards her.

Joong: JAE-NUNA!!!

Jae didn't respond to him. The rain was so heavy she couldn't even hear herself crying. Let alone hear Joong's cries. Furthermore, the pills she took were taking effect on her, making her slowly close her eyes.

Joong shook Jae violently when he reached her.

Joong: NUNA!!! GWENCHANAYO? WHY DIDN'T YOU TELL ME?

Jae opened her eyes and looked at Joong. He was drenched in the rain too. She thought she was having illusions from the pills. She shook her head slightly. Joong was still there.

Joong: WHY DIDN'T YOU TELL ME THAT ZE-HYUNG'S DEAD?!!!

Jae: What's the point in telling you? It won't bring him back to life... Anyway, it doesn't matter now...

Joong: BUT IT DOES MATTER!!! IF I'D KNOWN I'D NEVER HAD PROPOSED TO YUKI!!!

Jae: What has this gotta do with you marrying Yuki?

Joong: DON'T YOU UNDERSTAND?!!! YOU'RE THE ONE I LOVE JAE-NUNA!!!

Jae (pushing Joong's hands away, trying to get up): I think you're confusing sibling love for romantic love Joongie... You should get back to your wedding now... Don't let your wife wait for you...

Joong (grabbing Jae back into his grip): ANDWAE!!!! I'M NOT MARRYING YUKI!!! YOU'RE THE ONE I LOVE!!! I'VE LOVED YOU SINCE YOUNG!!! IT'S JUST THAT I WAS TOO YOUNG TO KNOW THAT IT WAS ROMANTIC LOVE THEN... BUT WHEN I SAW YOU WITH ZE-HYUNG, I WAS SO JEALOUS!!! I KNEW THEN THAT IT WAS NOT JUST SIBLING LOVE... I WANT YOU AS MY YEOJA CHINGU... MY JAGI... MY BRIDE... MY YEOBO... SARANGHEYO...

Joong pulled Jae into his arms, forcing a kiss on her lips. Jae pushed him away.

Jae: LET GO OF ME!!! YOU DON'T KNOW WHAT YOU ARE TALKING ABOUT!!! I DON'T NEED YOU SYMPATHY!!! YOU DON'T HAVE TO TAKE CARE OF ME COS OF ONE CHILDHOOD PROMISE... I KNOW YOU LOVE YUKI... YOU THOUGHT YOU WERE KISSING HER THAT'S WHY YOU WOKE UP AT THE OPERATION TABLE RIGHT? STOP KIDDING YOURSELF...

Joong: ANIO!!! I KNEW THAT IT WAS YOU KISSING ME!!! YOU DON'T KNOW HOW LONG I'VE BEEN WANTING TO KISS YOU!!! THE ONLY PRETENDING THAT I'VE BEEN DOING IS WHEN YOU SAW US IN MY ROOM THAT DAY, I WAS PRETENDING THAT YUKI WAS YOU WHEN I KISSED HER!!!

Jae (hitting Joong weakly): Let go of me... Ze's my husband... I'm married... I cannot love you... I cannot... I... must... not...

Jae fainted, collapsing in Joong's arms. He rushed her to the hospital. Pacing anxiously outside the operating theatre.

Joong's thoughts: Please Jae-nuna... Please be alright... I've been waiting for a chance to love you for so long... Please let me have that chance... Don't take it away from me... Sarangheyo...

Dr Park came out of the operating theatre. Joong rushed up to him.

Joong: How is she?

Dr Park: Her condition's stable now. We've cleared all the sleeping pills from her stomach. But she's quite fragile emotionally. She's taken a whole bottle of sleeping pills. It's obvious she was trying to kill herself. You'd better stay with her for the time being. Just in case...

Joong: Araso... Kamsahamnida...

Jae opened her eyes weakly. She found herself in a ward, with Joong holding onto her hand and sleeping beside her bed. He was still in his wet tuxedo shirt and pants.

Jae's thoughts: Ze... Why won't you let me be with you up there?

*FLASHBACK*
Ze's halmuhni: My child... I'll go live with you... But I'm already an old lady... I'd be gone soon... If you find someone you love and loves you... Go ahead and pursue your happiness... I won't hold it against you... You're still young... I'm sure Ze won't want you to stay alone forever...

Jae: Anio halmuhni... He died trying to save me... I owe my life to him... I promised that I'll stay as his wife forever...

*END OF FLASHBACK*

Jae's thoughts: Mianeyo... I think I've fallen for Joongie... What should I do?

Jae tried to pull her hand out from Joong's. But she woke him up instead when she tried to pull her hand out.

Joong: Jae-nuna... You're awake.. That's great...

Joong stood up, wanting to give her a hug.

Jae (turning away from him): Joongie-ya... Mianeyo... I can't accept your love...

Joong: Wae?

Jae (avoiding his eyes): Ze died trying to save me... I owe my life to him... I promised that I'll stay as his wife forever...

Joong: But I'm sure Ze-hyung won't want you to stay alone forever... He would want you to be happy...

Jae: But I am happy... Like this...

Joong (angrily): You call THIS happy? You just tried to kill yourself... How can you say that you are happy?

Jae kept quiet. Joong was right. She wasn't happy at all. She wanted to die. So that her pain would go away.

Joong: Nuna... Please give me a chance... To love you... As a lover... Not a dongsaeng...

Jae (pleadingly): I can't Joongie... I promised Ze... I can't...

Joong: If you're not opening your heart again, I'm closing mine too... From today onwards, I'll not love another except you...

Jae (trying her best to force back her tears): You don't have to do this Joongie... You've got Yuki... You're different... You've still got everything... Me... I've got nothing... Nothing...

Joong (turns Jae's face to face him): You've still got me... I'm always here for you... I promised too... Remember?

Jae was already crying. Her tears stained her face. Joong reached to wipe away her tears.

Joong: And to me you are my everything... I don't need anything else if I've got you... But if I don't have you, it doesn't matter if I have the world... It'd still be nothing to me... Sarangheyo...

Joong leaned in and kissed Jae. Like that time in the medics camp, Jae gave in to Joong's kiss. But this time it was different, she knew that he was kissing her as herself.

It was Joong's 21st birthday. And Jae's 27th birthday. They were born on the same day. But 6 years apart. Fate had brought them together in miraculous ways. It was like a rainbow, where you knew that there would be a pleasant surprise at the other end.

Or rather, after all the storms that they had to go through, the skies have finally cleared for them. And the rainbows had come out to celebrate the day with them.

They were getting married on this day. The day they both were brought into this world. The day Jae first carried baby Joong in her arms. The day baby Joong first set eyes on Jae. The day their fates were sealed together.

Would be the day that they would celebrate their love for each other, and become husband and wife.

Pastor: I now pronounce you husband and wife. You may kiss the bride now Joong.

Joong lifted the veil from Jae's face. He looked at her lovingly. He wanted to scream out loud to the whole world that his beloved Jae-nuna, oops, Jae-yeobo now, was now lawfully his wife...

He leaned in to kiss Jae.

Joong: Sarangheyo... Jae... I'm now the happiest saram (person) in the world...

Jae smiled.

Jae: You're wrong...

Joong: Huh?

Jae: I'm the happiest and most loved saram (person) in the world... Cos I have the love of the two men whom I love most in my life... Ze and you... Sarangheyo...

Joong: Your voice is my rainbow, I'd cross the sky just to reach it... And to hear you say sarangheyo to me...

Jae smiled, fondling Joong's face, and tip-toed to meet her lips with his, giving him a long and passionate kiss.

The guests cheered as they kissed.

Rainbow 彩虹 - Chapter 11

Chapter 11: Eternal...

Jae's POV:

I forgot all about Joong that day... In fact I didn't get out from my tent for a whole week after Ze's funeral service... I was crying everyday... My eyes were so swollen and red from crying and lack of sleep that they were so bloodshot, one would think that I was suffering from red eyes...

I couldn't sleep cos once my eyes closed, I had nightmares of Ze being shot and dying in my arms. So instead, I cried myself to sleep every night. I cried and cried and cried until my eyes couldn't stay open anymore.

Nurse Kim tried to persuade me to eat, but I never had any appetite. And I would vomit out anything that went into my system. As a result, I lost weight rapidly. Until one day Dr Jung was called in to check on me, as Nurse Kim had found me unconscious in my tent from hunger and dehydration. This was when I came out from my cocoon...

And I realised that I couldn't mourn anymore for my sad and sorry state. I needed to get to work and fight back. The first thing I remembered was... Where was Joong? I missed him hugging me to console me when I cried... And again there was no one there to lend a shoulder for me to cry on this time... I had to go through another death alone... Some of the nurses told me that they had saw him get into one of the trucks sending recovered soldiers back to their camps... I was torn... I prayed hard that he would still be alive...

Anyway, I pulled myself together. Or rather, I FORCED myself together. I FORCED myself to work. I FORCED myself to work SO hard that I can forget everything and sleep at night...

A few months later.. The thing that I've been hating to the core had finally ended. But it wasn't without its victims...

I was badly defeated by it...

Wounded so badly that I didn't think that I could ever get back on my feet again...

I've lost the three most important people in my life...

My Dad...

My Mum...

My Ze...

As I walked back to my house, I noticed that Joong had already reached his house with his dad, and his mum and Yuki were welcoming them at the door with hugs and kisses. I looked over to my own house. There was no one there. Tears threatened to spill from my eyes. But I blinked them back forcefully.

Joong's mum: JAE!!!

Joong's mum saw me and called and waved to call me over to their house. Joong pulled himself away from Yuki, and turned around. Our eyes met. But we didn't say anything.

Jae (forcing a smile): Ajumma, ajushi... annyeong haseyo... chaljinaessoyo?

I greeted Joong's parents. Joong's mum grabbed my hands and pulled me over for a hug.

Joong's mum: Oh my poor child... Gwenchanayo?

Jae: Ne... Gwenchana... Don't worry about me ajumma... I'll be fine...

Joong's mum: You wanna come over for dinner later? I've cooked a lot of food. Joong's fave Ja Jang Myun, your fave kimchi fried rice, and...

Jae (interrupting her): Komawoyo ajumma... But I'm going over to visit Ze's halmunhni (granny) later after I drop my things... Maybe next time...

Joong's thoughts: She looks so much thinner and so exhausted... Must have been hard on her at the medic's camp... Even her cheerful aura is gone... How come Ze-hyung didn't send her back?

Joong's mum: Oh I see... Next time then... I'll cook your fave kimchi fried rice again... Send our regards to his granny for me...

Jae (smiles): Ne... ajumma... next time I'll come by for dinner... Mianeyo... I gotta go back now... I don't want halmuhni to wait too long for me... Annyeong kyesayo...

I walked back to my own empty house and dropped off my bags in my room. I took a quick shower and changed into some casual clothes and left my house to go to Ze's house to visit his granny. She was left alone since both Ze's dad and Ze passed away. Jae wanted to ask her if she would like to move in with her at her house when she visited her today, so that she could take care of her for Ze.

Back at Joong's house...

Joong's mum and Yuki kept piling food on Joong's bowl.

Joong: Omma, Yuki... That's enough food for me already... You guys take some for yourselves too...

Joong's mum: You should eat more... You've grown so much thinner... (turns to Joong's dad) you too yeobo... eat more...

Joong smiled as his mum started piling food into his dad's bowl now. They were such a happy couple... Very much like Jae's parents...

Joong's thoughts: I wonder how Jae-nuna is doing now? Is she having her dinner happily at Ze-hyung's now with him and his granny?

Yuki: Joong... Joong...

Joong turned to see Yuki looking at him lovingly. He smiled. And she smiled back at him, planting a peck on his cheek.

Yuki: Sarangheyo Joong...

Joong was surprised. But he missed Yuki saying she loved him to him. He missed the feeling of being loved by someone...

Joong: Appa, omma...

His parents turned to look at him.

Joong took Yuki's hand in his and said.

Joong: I wish to marry Yuki...

Everyone was shocked by his sudden proposal. But of course everyone was happy for him. He was already of marriageable age. And Yuki loved him so much. And they thought that he loved her as much too.

Joong's thoughts: Jae-nuna's found her happiness with Ze-hyung... I must forget her... I know Yuki is not Jae-nuna... But she loves me more than I can ever love her back... But all I need now is to feel loved... unconditionally... By someone...

At Ze's house...

Jae cooked a nice meal for Ze's halmuhni and herself. The old lady has aged a lot. But the lost of her son and her grandson had most likely taken away a lot of her jovial nature. Jae could see that she was not the same as before.

Jae: Halmuhni... Won't you come live with me in my house? I can take care of you... I'm working now... I have a job at the hospital... I start next week...

Ze's halmuhni: Jae-ya, I know you are a very filial girl... But you are not obliged to take care of me... You know that right?

Jae: Wae? You're Ze's halmuhni... I should take care of you... And I want to...

Ze's halmuhni: But you're not even married...

Jae: Halmuhni... I'm already Ze's wife in his eyes before he left... And I already see him as my husband too... So... Please don't say such things anymore... Please come and live with me... I want to take care of you...

Ze's halmuhni: My dear child... Ze is so lucky to know you... Pity he didn't have the fortune take you as his wife...

Ze's halmuhni gave up and stopped trying to persuade Jae. She knew that Jae was a stubborn girl, despite being very filial... Once she had decided on something, nothing could change her mind. After dinner, they packed up her things and Jae helped her move to her house.

Once Joong's parents knew that Jae had brought Ze's granny back to her house to stay, they invited her over for dinners whenever Jae wasn't around. But no one asked why Ze and his dad didn't come stay with them too. And since no one asked. No one knew that they had already passed away. And eversince Joong proposed to Yuki, he had been out at her house almost every night for dinner to discuss the wedding preparations. And he didn't meet Jae or Ze's halmuhni at all.

One day when Jae was walking home after a long day at the hospital, she saw Joong walking out of his house with Yuki. He helped her open the car door, and let her go in, before walking over to his side of the car and hopped on. When Joong got in, Yuki leaned over to show Joong her ring on her wedding ring finger, which glittered in the moonlight, and gave him a passionate kiss on his lips. When Jae saw it, she turned around and hid herself from view. Joong's car drove past her.

Jae's POV:

I see they are getting married... Congratulations Joongie... My dong saeng... You've found your true love...

I grabbed my heart with my hand. I felt my heart hurt so bad that I collapsed onto the ground. Tears started blurring in my vision.

Why does my heart feel like it's being cut into a million pieces?

Joongie-ya... I'm glad you found true love... But... Wae? Why does it hurt so much to see the two of you together? Have I already fallen for you subconsciously?


*FLASHBACK 1 - childhood days*
Joong: Nuna... I want to grow up faster... So I can protect you from anyone who bullies you...

He hugged me. My eyes welled with tears when I heard him say that. It was so sweet.

Joong: Why are you crying nuna? Is it very painful?

He caressed my cheek again with his small hand.

Jae: Anio... It's not painful...

Joong: Don't cry nuna... Cos Joongie loves Jae-nuna the most... I want you to be my bride when I grow up!!!

He smiled happily at me and gave me a kiss on my lips.


*FLASHBACK 2 - The Kiss*
Joong: Nuna... Mianeyo... I can't take this anymore... Just let me go...

Jae: NOOOOOOOO!!! YOU'RE NOT LEAVING ME AGAIN UNTIL YOU CLEAR YOUR DEBT TO ME!!!! YOU PROMISED ME!!! I'M NOT ALLOWING IT!!! JOONGIE!!! WAKE UP!!! DON'T CLOSE YOUR EYES!!! STAY WITH ME!!!

I grabbed his face with my hands and leaned down to give him a kiss on his lips...


*FLASHBACK 3 - Nurse Kim's comments*
Nurse Kim: ... you two were an item... Cos you kissed him during the operation...

Jae: That's cos we ran out of anaesthetics... And Dr Jung asked me to distract him from the pain...

Nurse Kim: I know... But still... Would you kiss him if he were just any other patient? And you treat him so differently during your rounds... And the way he looks at you...


*FLASHBACK 4 - I'll Be There*
Jae: There... I'll eat lunch and dinner with you everyday from now on... If you want that is...

Joong: Kamsahamnida nuna!!! I know you love me the most!!!

Joong reached over and hugged me.

Jae: You silly boy... You're my only dongsaeng... Of cos I love you the most...

Joong pulled me into his arms and hugged me.

Joong: It's okay nuna... You still have me... I promise I'll be there for you always...

Joong: Gwenchana... You're my only nuna... As your dongsaeng, I'll do anything for you...

That night Jae didn't go back home after she stopped crying. She went to the cemetery, where Ze, his dad and her parents' graves were at.

Jae: Appa... Omma... It's your daughter... Jae... Can you hear me? I missed you guys so much... I missed you cooking omma... And your nagging Appa... I do hope you are having a good time up there... I'm counting down to the day when I'll see you guys again... Sarangheyo...

She moved to Ze's tomb, and sat herself down, leaning her body against it, hugging it.

Jae: Ze... Joong's getting married to Yuki... I saw them today... But I don't know when the big day is... But I'm gonna miss my dongsaeng once he's married... I can't hang out with him anymore...

Jae started crying again.

Jae's tears were forming a small dark puddle on Ze's tombstone, as they fell from her sorrowful eyes.

Chapter 10: キッスしたまま、さよなら (As We Kissed, Goodbye)

Jae: ZE!!!

Jae ran straight into Ze's arms, making him take a step back on the impact. And she hugged him tightly.

Ze: Woah... I see you've missed me... A LOT...

He put his arms around Jae and hugged her back. Tears started welling in Jae's eyes when she heard him speak. He didn't know how much she had missed him. She wanted him to be around for her when her dad died. She needed him beside her to comfort her when her mum died. But he wasn't around. And she had to go through all those alone. Her tears were pouring out like that day in Joong's tent, soaking Ze's army shirt and leaving a deep mark on it.

Ze pulled Jae away from the hug to take a look at her. He lifted a hand to wipe the tears from Jae's tear-stained face. She was still sobbing profusely.

Ze: What's wrong Jae? Why are you crying so much? Something happened when I was gone?

Jae nodded.

Jae: My parents...

Ze: Yeah... Ajushi and ajumma... How are they?

Jae titled her head up to look at Ze. Her eyes were tearing even more now. Her lips were quivering from crying and her body was shaking slightly.

Ze's thoughts: Oh no... Not her parents too...

Ze's dad had been hit by a bullet during a surprise attack at their camp, and he didn't make it. Ze had been struggling along all this time, and since their camp was attacked, he didn't get Jae's letter to inform him that she was becoming a medic. He only knew a couple of months later, and had immediately requested to go meet her.

Ze: It's alright Jae... I'm here now... Your parents can enjoy their stay up there, they won't have to worry about you anymore... They can leave you in my hands... I'll take care of you from now on...

Ze smiled and leaned in to kiss Jae on her lips.

Joong: What's taking Jae-nuna so long today? It's already past lunch time and she still hasn't checked on me yet...

After a long kiss, Ze parted his lips from Jae's and smiled at her.

Jae (sudden realisation): OMO!!! I FORGOT TO CHECK ON JOONGIE!!!

She dashed out of her office, leaving Ze shocked and confused.

Ze: JAE!!! WHERE ARE YOU GOING?!!!

Jae popped her head back in.

Jae: I gotta go check on Joong now... I'm already late for my rounds...

Ze: Joong's here too?

Jae: Yeah... He was injured in battle... You wanna come with me to see him?

Ze: Sure...

Ze walked over to Jae and took her hand in his, walking alongside her to Joong's tent.

Joong: Ah this irresponsible nuna... She's forgotten all about me!!! Such an unprofessional doctor...

Jae popped her head into Joong's tent. Joong looked up at her when she did and pouted, folding his arms across his chest in mock anger.

Jae: Joongie-ya... Mianada... I forgot the time... Have you had your lunch yet?

Joong: Dr Jae, you'd better hurry... Or else you're gonna delay ALL the patients you've got to see after me...

Jae: Joongie... I know you're angry... Don't be mad... I'm late cos I had a visitor...

Joong: Visitor?

Jae: Ne... Someone you know too...

Joong's thoughts: Who could it be?

Ze: Joong!!! My dongsaeng!!!

Ze stepped into the tent and walked beside Jae, pulling her into his arms.

Joong was shocked. In fact he was MORE than shocked. He felt his eyeballs almost pop out of their sockets.

Joong's thoughts: Ze-hyung!! How did he know that Jae-nuna was here?!!!

Jae smiled at Ze and looked back at Joong.

Jae: Aren't you happy to see your fave hyung? I thought you two were always so chummy together... Leaving me out of most of the things you did...

Joong (fighting back his shock): Of cos I am happy to see Ze-hyung!!! But hyung, how come you're here too? You're not injured too are you?

Ze: Anio... I got a letter from Jae telling me she's a medic here... But I got it quite late, cos my camp was attacked... We had to emergency evacuate the place... And my dad died... So...

Jae: Oh no... Ze...

Jae turned herself around to face Ze. He didn't tell her that his dad had died too. She looked at him sadly, softly caressing his face with her hand. He grabbed hold of her hand and pulled it to his heart.

Ze: Gwenchana Jae... I've still got Granny... And you...

Joong's thoughts: Now that he's found her... She doesn't need me anymore... It's time for me to make my exit...

One fine spring day...

Spring had come. But war was still not over. The medics camp was surrounded by beautiful flora, and the entire camp exuded a cheerful and hopeful aura, despite all the injured and dying casualties hidden within the numerous tents.

Jae loved spring a lot. In fact she used to love to go pick wild flowers in the nearby hills when she was younger. It was no different now. She wanted to go pick some flowers for Ze and Joong's tents to brighten up their day. As she wanted it to be surprise for them, she went alone. Only Nurse Kim knew where she was going, as she had told him before they went to check on Joong.

Jae: Junsa-ya... I'm gonna go pick some flowers outside camp during lunch time... Can you make an excuse for me, so that I can't stay and lunch with Joong in Joong's tent later?

Nurse Kim: Okay... But be careful Jae...

Jae: Araso...

Joong had planned to leave the medic's camp after Jae checked on him one last time. He wanted to have lunch with her before he left. He didn't see a need for him to be around anymore, since Ze was already with her. And he couldn't bear seeing the two of them together. So he decided that he should head back to his own camp, since he had already almost fully recovered.

However, after she checked on him like usual. Nurse Kim told Jae that Dr Jung needed her to help him with something, and she couldn't stay to have lunch with him.

Joong: You're not gonna stay for lunch?

Nurse Kim: She can't Joong. Dr Jung needs her to help him with something. She needs to go now...

Jae: Mianeyo Joongie... I'll have dinner with you later to make up for it okay?

Joong nodded. And they left his tent. After he had his lunch. He packed his stuff and walked out of his tent with heavy heart, and joined a army truck which was sending recovered troops back to their camps.

Joong's thoughts: Annyeong kyeseyo Jae-nuna... Forgive me for leaving without saying goodbye... Cos I don't think I can bear to leave you if I do... I hope that you'll be happy with Ze-hyung... I wish you both the best...

And the truck he was on drove out of the camp.

Meanwhile, Jae was happily humming a song and picking wild flowers when Joong left the camp on the truck. Several metres away from her, there was someone lurking behind the tall grass...

Ze: Junsu-ya, have you seen Jae anywhere?

Nurse Kim: Ze!! You've gotta call me Nurse Kim when you're here!!!

Nurse Kim: Oh... Jae... Anio... Wae?

Ze: There's news that there's an escaped prisoner-of-war from a nearby camp... And I can't find her anywhere... Even Joong's not in his tent... I'm kinda worried...

Nurse Kim: WHAT?!!! ESCAPED POW!!! OH NO!!!

Ze: What's wrong?!!!

Nurse Kim: Jae went to pick wild flowers out on the hill behind our camp for you and Joong during lunch time... She wanted it to be a surprise... So we kept it from both of you...

Ze: WHAT!!!!

Ze dashed out of the camp immediately and ran as fast as he could towards the hill behind the camp.

Jae heard some rustling sound behind the tall grass. She stopped humming and listened hard.

Jae: Anyone there?

Nothing.

*FLASHBACK*

Nurse Kim: Okay... But be careful Jae...

Jae: Araso...

*END OF FLASHBACK*

Jae suddenly remembered what Nurse Kim told her. And it dawned on her that it was really dangerous for her to be out here alone picking wild flowers when there's a war going on out there. She hurriedly gathered her things.

She noticed someone running up the hill as she was gathering her things. She squinted and stared harder at the person. It was Ze. She started waving madly to him happily.

Ze grabbed her into his arms when he reached her. Jae was shocked.

Jae: Ze... What's wrong?

Ze: You gave me a shock... I thought something happened to you... when I couldn't find you anywhere...

Jae: Something happened in camp?

Ze: There's news from the nearby camp that there's an escaped prisoner-of-war on the loose... I was so scared when Junsu told me you were out here alone... I was afraid you might bump into him and get into trouble...

Jae: But I didn't right? I'm still here... I'm fine... Don't worry... Let's head back to camp...

Ze: Okay...

They both turned to walk back to camp. Ze heard a rustling sound. This time Jae heard it again. It was the same sound as before. Ze took out his gun and looked around the grass. As the grass was so tall, visibility was really low.

Jae: Ze... Let's just head on back...

Ze: You go first... I'll be right behind you...

Jae: Anio Ze... Let's just leave together...

Her hand was firmly on Ze's, as she didn't want him to stay behind and get injured if the person behind the tall grass was really the escaped prisoner-of-war. If he could escape from such a tight-security camp, who knows what kind of person that POW is?

POW: You're BOTH not going anywhere...

A man walked out of the tall grass with a gun in his hand, pointing at Ze and Jae.

POW: I gave you a chance to go... You didn't take it... Since you already know about me, I'll just have to kill the both of you now...

Jae rushed in front of Ze, shielding him from the POW.

Ze: Jae, move behind me!!! What are you doing??!!!

Jae: ANIO!!! Please let us off sir... We promise we won't tell anyone we've seen you... We're all just victims of this stupid war... Let's not hurt anyone anymore... I don't want to see anymore casualties... Please...

POW: You're right miss... It's a stupid war... But we're all just victims... I have no choice too... If I don't kill you... I'll get killed... It's a dog eat dog world... I have no choice...

Jae: NOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!

A gun shot could be heard.

The POW fell backwards onto the tall grass. Jae rushed over to check on him. He was shot in his head by Ze. Dead upon being hit.

Then Jae rushed back to Ze, who had now kneed down onto the ground, head looking down.

Jae: Ze... He's dead... Ze!!!!

Ze grasped his chest with his hand. His uniform was slowly being stained a deep shade of red. Jae realised what was happening. There was only one gun shot heard, as they had both fired at the same time. And since Ze pulled Jae aside at the last minute, she had fallen down onto the ground and not realised that Ze had been hit, as she only saw the POW fall backwards onto the grass.

Jae: Ze!!! You're hit too??!!!! Let me see the wound!!!

Jae peeled Ze's hand away from his wound, and torn his shirt apart. He was hit around his spleen area. Blood was gushing out of his wound profusely. Jae pressed her hands on his wound to try to stop the bleeding, but it didn't work. She torn her doctor robe to tie around his waist in hope to ease the bleeding.

Jae: Ze... I gotta get you back to camp now... Can you walk?

Ze nodded. Jae struggled to help him up. But he stumbled back down. His hands were already turning cold.

Jae: Ze... Listen to me... Don't close your eyes... Stay with me...

Ze: Jae... I can't walk...

Jae: Anio Ze... Listen to me... Come on... If you can't walk... I'll carry you back to camp...

Jae grabbed Ze and tried to piggy back him back to camp. He was too heavy for her. She was struggling very hard to not drop him, while trying to move as fast as she could. She could feel his wound bleeding so much that her uniform was soaked with his blood.

When Jae reached the camp gate, the rest rushed out to help her get Ze to the operating tent. She held onto his hand when they carried him to the tent.

Jae: You're gonna be okay Ze... Don't worry... Dr Jung will save you...

Dr Jung tried his best with the rest to help Ze. But he had already lost too much blood and the bullet had hit his spleen. He was beyond anything that they could do for him.

Ze (weakly): Jae... Mianeyo... I can't keep my promise...

Jae: NO!!!! ZE!!! LISTEN TO ME!!! LISTEN TO ME!!! DON'T YOU DARE CLOSE YOUR EYES!!! DON'T YOU DARE LEAVE ME!!! YOU PROMISED TO TAKE CARE OF ME FOREVER!!! YOU'RE NOT SUPPOSED TO LEAVE ME!!!

Ze (weakly and turning breathless): Mianeyo... I'll... I'll explain... to your parents... when I see them...

Jae: ANDWAE!!!! I DON'T WANT YOU TO EXPLAIN TO THEM!!! I WANT YOU TO STAY WITH ME!!! OPEN YOUR EYES!!! PLEASE!!!

Ze (eyes closing slowly): Jae... Sarang... sarang... ham... ni... da...

Jae shook Ze violently, trying to wake him up. But to no avail. He was gone. There was nothing she could do.

Jae (crying profusely): NOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!! ZE!!!!!! ZE!!!!! WAKE UP!!!! YOU HEAR ME!!!! WAKE UP!!!!

Dr Jung: Time of death. 14th February 2014. 1402 hours.

Dr Jung tapped Jae's shoulders twice and stepped out along with the rest, leaving her alone with Ze.

After crying for a very long time, Jae was still hugging Ze in her arms.

Jae (softly): Ze... Wake up... This is my lips... Feel it...

She lowered her face and kissed his lips gently.

Jae (softly): Open... Open your eyes... Just look at me now...

Her tears dripped onto Ze's face.

Jae (sobbing): You were everything to me in this world...

Chapter 9: Being Dr Jae...

For the next few weeks, Jae took really good care of Joong. As he was her first patient, that she was left to take charge of alone. She was extra careful when she went for her rounds and checked on Joong. Well this is also partly because he was her best friend. Jae didn't want his mum to worry about him. She didn't want her and his dad to go through the same pain that she had gone through when she lost her parents. She wanted to protect Joong and nurse him back to the pink of health before he went back to them.

For Joong, it was a heaven-sent gift for him to have his beloved Jae-nuna be his doctor-in-charge. This meant he could see her every day and a few times every day, as she went on her rounds a few times a day to check on all the patients. Moreover, since she was his sole doctor in charge, she would come alone with only a nurse tagging along to assist her. Everything would have been so much more ideal if she would come alone to check on him. He would be able to spend more time alone with her then...

One typical day for Jae... If there were no new casualties being sent in...

Wake up and get herself ready for the day.
Grab a quick breakfast at the food tent.
Go on morning rounds with Dr Jung.
Go check on Joong alone with Nurse Kim before lunch.
Take his temperature, blood pressure, and heart beat.
Ask Joong how he's feeling. Any more pain? Fever, etc?
Change the dressing on Joong's wound.
See if the wound is healing well.
Lunch served to patients.
Leave to lunch at food tent with the rest of the medics.
Patients take nap.
Check supplies with Nurse Kim and Nurse Shim.
Go back to own tent to write report.
Update Dr Jung on patients' situations, etc.
Evening rounds with Dr Jung.
Check on Joong again.
Dinner served to patients.
Leave to have dinner at food tent with the rest of the medics.
Go back to own tent to settle any remaining work.
Get a bath.
Rest for the day.


One day...

Lunch was served extremely early. Or rather Jae was delayed while going on rounds with Dr Jung, as a patient was having a fit due to the wound. Dr Jung left to have his lunch after the rounds and Jae still had to go check on Joong with Nurse Kim.

After going about her daily routine of taking his temperature, etc, she was left with changing the dressing for Joong...

*GRRRRRR*

Jae looked at Nurse Kim who grabbed his stomach embarassedly. Jae tapped his shoulder.

Jae: Gwenchanayo Junsu... You must be hungry... Go ahead and have your lunch first... I'll finish up with Joong here myself...

Nurse Kim: But Jae... Are you sure? I can still endure... *GRRRRRRR*

His stomach growled another time. This time Jae and Joong both smiled.

Jae (amused): Junsu-ya... Go get your lunch first... Your stomach is protesting already!! Go on...

Jae ushered Nurse Kim out of the tent. Joong was overjoyed. He had been waiting for this day since the day he came in.

Jae: Well it's just me then... I hope I can do a good job at dressing your wound... I'm not as good as Nurse Kim... I must let you know first...

Joong: Gwenchana nuna... I know you'll do fine...

Jae stood beside Joong's bed and started taking out the dressing gingerly, not wanting to cause Joong any unnecessary pain. She was paying so much attention the the wound she didn't even realise that Joong had been staring at her the whole time when she was doing it.

Joong's thoughts: Jae-nuna looked so mesmerizing when she's focusing on something. She was so near to me I could smell the faint scent of her freshly shampooed hair. Thankfully she was so focused on changing my wound that she didn't even know that I was staring at her the whole time... Jae-nuna... Just let me savour this moment alone with you... Even though I know I can never hold you in my arms, or kiss you like that time again...

Jae: Yeogi! Done!

Jae finally finished changing Joong's dressing and placed his knee back down onto the bed. Joong quickly averted his eyes from Jae when he heard her, pretending to look at his knee instead.

Jae's wound dressing skills were indeed a tad below par. His knee now looked like it was over-bandaged with too thick a layer of gauze on top of it, making it look swollen like a pig's trotter.

Joong: NUNA!!! Now my knee looks like a pig's!!!

Jae (scratches her head embarassingly): Mianeyo Joongie... I told you I'm not very good at dressing wounds... It'll be just for a day... Nurse Kim will do it properly for you tomorrow... I promise...

Jae looked at Joong pleadingly with a act-cute face. For a moment, there was an awkward silence, as Joong stared at Jae intensely, not speaking, as Joong felt a strong urge to kiss her. Jae also felt there was a strange vibe in Joong's look, but she couldn't quite tell what it was...

Camp Food Server: Lunch's here!!!

The patients' lunches were being served, and it was Joong's turn for his lunch. The food server interupted the awkward silence, and there was time for Jae to excuse herself to leave the tent together with the food server.

Jae: Oh Joongie, since your lunch's here... I might as well be on my way then... I need to go grab mine too and catch up on some work... Enjoy your meal...

Jae started walking out along with the food server.

Joong: Jae-nuna!!!

Jae turned back when she heard Joong call her. She popped her head back into the tent blurly. From Joong's point of view, she looked really cute.

Jae: Ne... What is it, Joongie?

Joong smiled and scratched his head sheepishly.

Joong: Erm... Why don't you lunch with me?

Jae: Wae? Something wrong? You don't like the food?

Joong shook his head.

Joong: Anio... It's just... I stay here alone... There's no one else here...

Jae: Uh huh...

Joong: So... It's... kinda... Lonely to eat alone... everyday... every meal...

Jae: Ah... Mianeyo... I didn't... I...

Joong: It's alright if you don't want to... I know you are busy... It's okay nuna... I understand...

Joong started preparing his food to start eating.

Jae: Anio Joongie... Mianeyo...

Jae's thoughts: He must miss his family... his dad... his mum... and... Yuki... Like how I miss dad and mum... and... Ze...

Jae: I meant I didn't think that you'd be... lonely... here...

Joong looked at Jae. Her eyes looked really sad. It made his heart ache to see her look so sad.

Joong: Gwenchana nuna... If you can't make it I can eat by myself... Go on with your work... You don't have to worry about me...

Jae: Wait for me for a minute... I'll be right back...

Jae rushed out of Joong's tent and rushed to the food tent, grabbed her share of food and dashed back to Joong's tent.

Jae: There... I'll eat lunch and dinner with you everyday from now on... If you want that is...

Joong smiled. Another godsend gift for him. Of course he wanted it!!!

Joong: Kamsahamnida nuna!!! I know you love me the most!!!

Joong reached over and hugged Jae.

Jae: You silly boy... You're my only dongsaeng... Of cos I love you the most...

Joong's thoughts: I'm not a boy anymore... I am a man now... And I know I love you as a woman... Not as a nuna... But... I know you'll never love me like how you love Ze-hyung...

Jae: Come on let's eat... I'm famished...

Jae pulled away from the hug and sat herself on Joong's bed, sharing the table with him to eat her lunch. She scooped some of her food over to his plate, as she could never finish all her food. Even at home. And she would always give Joong some of her food whether they ate together in the past. Eating together like this reminded Jae of the past, when they ate together everyday with their parents.

As she ate, she tried very hard to force her tears back. She was thinking of her parents. She missed them very badly. And this war was taking its toll on her emotionally. She didn't hear any news from Ze. And she didn't know if he was still alive or not.

Joong noticed Jae sniffing slightly and looked at her. Tears were streaming down her face. He reached his hand over and used his thumb to wipe away her tears.

Joong: What's wrong nuna? How come you're crying?

Jae hurriedly turned away from Joong to wipe her tears. She felt his hand on her shoulder, turning her back to face him.

Joong: Nuna... what's wrong?

Jae: Eating like this just reminded me... of... my... parents...

Joong: You miss them badly? Did you write to them?

Joong didn't know that Jae's parents were dead.

Jae (sobbing): Joongie... Even if I wrote to them... They'll never get my letters...

Joong: Wae?

Jae (tears streaming down her face now as she spoke, choking her words slightly): My parents... They... They... died...

Joong: WHAT?!!! HOW COME YOU NEVER TOLD ME?!!!

Jae (tears streaming down face): Mianeyo... I... I...

Joong pulled Jae into his arms and hugged her.

Joong: It's okay nuna... You still have me... I promise I'll be there for you always...

Jae was crying profusely. She grabbed onto Joong's shirt tightly when she bawled. Her tears stained Joong's shoulder and back soaking wet. She never cried so much since the day after her mum died. She told herself that she would not be defeated by this war. She would defeat it by saving as many lives as she could, in replace of her parents' lives which were taken away from her.

Joong's thoughts: Nuna... How come you never told me? I wished you didn't have to go through this alone... I... I should have been there for you... To protect you from this... Mianeyo... It's all my fault...

Joong hugged Jae until her sobbing subsided and she let go of him.

Joong: Feeling better now?

Jae: Ne... Kamsahamnida Joongie... Mianeyo for messing up your clothes... And lunch...

Joong: Gwenchana... You're my only nuna... As your dongsaeng, I'll do anything for you...

Jae smiled and started eating her lunch. Joong followed suit and smiled at her as they ate.

Joong's thoughts: Nuna... I wished that I could take away your pain... Let me be the one to bear it for you... I want you to be happy... Yongwonhi (forever)...

Another few weeks passed...

Joong's wound was healing very well under the loving care of Jae. And he was already starting physiotherapy to help him walk normally again.

True to Jae's promise, she had lunch and dinner with Joong every day. She had asked the camp food servers to include her meals in the patients' so that she could eat with Joong when his was served to him.

One day during her rounds...

Nurse Kim: Jae... Since we're like old schoolmates... Can I ask you something?

Jae: Ne Junsu... What is it?

Nurse Kim: You know... Your charge...

Jae: Ne... Joongie... Wae?

Nurse Kim: How are you guys related?

Jae: Oh... He's my god-dongsaeng... Our parents are good friends... So we stayed next door to each other... And we kinda grew up playing together...

Nurse Kim: Oh... I see... So you two are not "together"?

Jae: Huh? "Together"?

Jae kept quiet. She knew her answer was no. She wouldn't have done it if it were any other patient. Cos she would have been so much more professional and level-headed. She would have done something else to distract him, like knock him unconscious or something. But since it was Joong, she couldn't think clear-headedly. And more importantly, she couldn't bear to knock him unconscious herself.

Nurse Kim: And you treat him so differently during your rounds... And the way he looks at you...

Jae: Junsu-ya... Don't spout any more nonsense... He has a girl friend already... And he only treats me like a nuna... Nothing more... We're just very close as we've known each other since young...

Nurse Kim: If you say so... But I still think...

Nurse Shim: Dr Jae!!! There's someone here to see you!!!

Nurse Shim interupted Nurse Kim, and pulled Jae away to the main office tent.

Chapter 8: Desperate Measures...

Joong: AHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!

Joong gave a very loud scream when Dr Jung cut through his skin with a scalpel. Jae tried to hold him down on the operating table, but he was squirming like crazy because of the pain.

Dr Jung: JAE!!! HOLD HIM DOWN, OR ELSE I CAN'T OPERATE AT ALL!!!

Jae: YES DR JUNG!!!

Jae looked at Joong who was screaming and squirming around in pain. There was nothing she could do to help him ease the pain. She held his shoulders and tried to push him back onto the operating table.

Jae: Joongie-ya... Just look at ME... LISTEN to ME... Don't think about anything else... Just LISTEN to ME...

Joong: AHHHHH!!! I CAN'T NUNA!!! THE PAIN!!! IT'S TOO PAINFUL!!! JUST LET ME DIE... I CAN'T TAKE IT ANYMORE!!!

Jae: NOOOOO!!!!! YOU'RE NOT GOING TO DIE!!!! I'M NOT GONNA ALLOW THAT!!! YOU STILL OWE ME MONEY!!! YOU CAN'T DIE BEFORE YOU RETURN IT TO ME!!!

Joong: Nuna... Mianeyo... I can't take this anymore... Just let me go...

Jae: NOOOOOOOO!!! YOU'RE NOT LEAVING ME AGAIN UNTIL YOU CLEAR YOUR DEBT TO ME!!!! YOU PROMISED ME!!! I'M NOT ALLOWING IT!!!

Joong's eyes were slowly closing as the pain was making him go into unconsciousness...

Jae shook Joong's shoulders really hard but he was slowly slipping away...

There was nothing she could do...

But she couldn't let him leave her just like this... She couldn't do anything to save her own parents... She didn't want to lose her best friend to the war she hated to the core like this too...

She had to do something...

Jae: JOONGIE!!! WAKE UP!!! DON'T CLOSE YOUR EYES!!! STAY WITH ME!!!

She grabbed his face with her hands and leaned down to give him a kiss on his lips...

Joong's POV:

My eyes were closing slowly as the pain overtook my body and I was starting to feel numbness from all the pain...

I could hear Jae-nuna still calling for me to stay with her...

But I couldn't open my eyes... The pain was too much...

I didn't want to live...

I wanted to die...

I wished to die...

If I lived, I'd have to go through the pain of seeing the woman I love marry someone else...

It would be better that I died now... At least the pain would be lesser...

Then...

Suddenly...

I felt something warm and soft on my cold lips. I felt a pair of lips on mine. And it was slowly taking my mind off the pain. Who did this pair of lips belong to? Was I dreaming? I forced open my eyes drowsily. I saw Jae-nuna's face in front of mine, with her eyes closed, but tears were falling down from her eyes, and her tears dripped onto my face...

She was kissing me... The lips belonged to her... The one I swore to protect and never let her cry again... The one I had been dreaming of kissing every single day...

I lifted my hands weakly up to her face and rubbed away her tears with my hands. Her eyes opened when she felt my hands on her face. In her eyes I saw joy and hope. I held her face in my hands and kissed her back, closing my eyes slowly to savour the moment...

As she didn't push me away when I kissed her back, I slowly parted her lips with my tongue and started kissing her more passionately.

Sarangheyo... Jae-nuna...

Jae's POV:

When I saw that Joong was falling unconscious, I couldn't think of anything to do to help him...

I just...

I don't know why...

But I just grabbed him and kissed him...

I don't know if it was because I was confused or what...

I wasn't calm as usual like when I was faced with other casualties...

Seeing him injured and dying just made me lose all my common sense and professional judgement...

In fact I wasn't professional at all...

And when I felt his hands wiping my tears away, I was overjoyed that he was still alive...

I didn't even mind that he started kissing me back...

And passionately kissing me back...

He must have confusedly thought I was his girlfriend Yuki due to his pain...

I didn't care...

As long as it kept his mind off the pain, and Dr Jung could operate on him...

I didn't mind at all...

As long as he could live...

I was willing do anything in my power...

To just keep him alive...

The rest of the medics looked at Jae in shock when she kissed Joong.

Nurse Shim: Dr Jae... You...

Dr Jung: Come on... We got to start the operation while Jae's busy distracting the patient, before it's too late...

They operated on Joong's knee. Joong could feel the scalpel cutting into him and getting the bullet out, but he forced himself to focus on kissing Jae instead. He grabbed her even tighter and kissed her even more urgently when he felt the pain was unbearable.

Jae knew that the operation had started when she felt Joong's grip on her face tighten. She knew he was trying his best to bear the pain and stay alive too...

Jae's thoughts: Hang in there Joongie... It'll be over soon... I promise... Just continue kissing me... Oh not me... You probably think I am Yuki, just pretend that you are kissing her... And stay alive...

Joong's thoughts: Jae-nuna... Sarangheyo... I want to live... I want to live for you...

An hour later, the operation was over. The bullet was out, and Dr Jung had already sewn Joong's wound up.

Dr Jung: Jae...

Jae opened her eyes and pulled herself away from Joong to face Dr Jung. Joong let go of her reluctantly, looking at her weakly as she spoke to Dr Jung.

Jae: Yes Dr Jung...

Dr Jung: The op was a success... The bullet's out and his condition is stable... But he has lost a lot of blood, and needs to rest and recuperate... Nurse Shim, can you see to that?

Nurse Shim: Araso...

Dr Jung: He's your charge from now on... Until he recovers...

Jae: But Dr Jung... I'm not a full doctor yet... I don't think I...

Dr Jung: You'll be fine... You're already a professional doctor... No doctor's had more experience than you in 10 years' time... Have more confidence in yourself... You can have some time with your chingu here... We'll carry on with our work first...

Jae nodded her head embarrassedly.

Dr Jung and the rest moved on to the next patient, leaving Jae and Joong alone in the makeshift tent.

Jae didn't dare to turn to look back at Joong, she didn't know what to say. Joong was looking at her weakly. He wanted so badly to pull her back into his arms and hold her again...

Jae: I guess I've just been appointed as your doctor until you're recovered... *hee hee* Me a doctor... Joongie's doctor... Like we are playing doctor and patient when we are young... *smiles*

Jae turned and looked over at Joong. He had already closed his eyes. Probably resting from the pain...

Jae: Joongie-ya... Wake up... Don't sleep... Stay awake... I'll go see if there are any more painkillers for you... Don't close your eyes... Wait for me alright?

Joong opened his eyes slowly, and when Jae saw him open his eyes, she dashed out of the tent to search for painkillers for him.

Joong's thoughts: Jae-nuna... I'll wait for you no matter how long it is... I'll be right here waiting... For you...

Chapter 7: Reunion?

Jae's POV:

Days... Weeks... Months passed by painfully... Slowly...

I missed Dad... I missed Ze... I missed Joong...

The war didn't cease... In fact it turned for the worst... We were being bombed... So all of us had to be evacuated from our homes... Joong's mum, my mum and me had to go stay at a shelter...

But that was not the end of the bad news...

I received news that my dad got seriously injured at the frontline, and didn't make it cos there were insufficient medics to attend to him... My mum fell ill upon hearing the news... And a few months later, she too didn't make it... I was left alone... Painfully disheartened by the news, I decided to join the military medics to provide my skills to good use saving lives... I left Joong's mum in the care of Ze's granny and bid them farewell...

I wrote to Ze and Joong to tell them that I would be joining the medics. But I didn't know if they would get the news at all. The situation was very chaotic. Since I haven't had much practical experience, I was assistant to a doctor at the camp, helping him tend to the various casualties.

I was at the medic camp one day as usual and that day a lot of casualties were brought in. Many of them suffered serious injuries from bullet and explosions. Our supplies were being used up very quickly.

Jae: Dr Jung... Our supplies are depleting at a very rapid rate... There are too many casualties...

Dr Jung: We need to inform them to send some of them to the other nearby medic camps... Nurse Kim, please see to that...

Nurse Kim: Araso Dr Jung...

Just as Nurse Kim went out, another few more casualties came in and we were tending to one of them. He was shot at his knee and was bleeding profusely. I tapped the soldier's shoulder to see if he's still conscious.

Jae: Can you hear me? Are you conscious? Can you tell me your name?

Joong's POV:

I didn't know if the pain was so much that I was hallucinating. I thought I heard Jae-nuna's voice calling me. I turned over to face the voice.

Jae: Joongie!!!

I forced my eyes open to look at the speaker. I saw Jae-nuna's face over mine looking all concerned. The light hanging over the camp, illuminated her face in such a way that she was glowing with the aura of an angel...

God is letting me see my angel one more time before I die...

My lids grew heavy and threatened to shut...

She shook me vigorously at my shoulders.

Jae: JOONGIE!!!! DON'T FALL ASLEEP!!! HANG IN THERE!!! YOU STILL OWE ME MONEY!!! YOU PROMISED TO RETURN IT TO ME!!!! WAKE UP!!! DON'T SLEEP!!!

I forced my lids open again. But the pain was draining my life away, as my blood soaked the sheets.

Dr Jung: Jae, we need to operate on your chingu (friend) now to get the bullet out of his knee... Or else he'll be crippled forever...

Jae gathered her composure and answered.

Jae: Yes Dr Jung... Anesthetic please... Nurse Shim...

Nurse Shim (worriedly): Dr Jae, we've run out of anesthetics... The last dose was just used by Dr Park...

Dr Jung: Then we'll just have to do it without anesthetics then...

Jae (eyes welling up with tears and worry now): But Dr Jung... He'll be in so much pain... I'm not sure if he can bear it...

Dr Jung: You think of something to distract your chingu (friend) from the pain... We've gotta do it now... There's no more time... The longer the bullet stays inside him, the smaller the chance of him ever walking again...

Jae: Araso... Dr Jung...

Jae walked back towards Joong and held his hand and tried to speak to him to distract him from the pain that was going to come.

Jae: Joongie-ya... Remember last time when you had your growth spurt, and you suddenly grew so tall... And I became shorter than you?

Joong smiled wearily as he recalled the times...

*FLASHBACK*

Jae: Joongie!!! Get back here you cheat!!! Not fair!!! You cheated!!!

Jae chased Joong around his room. She had lost to him yet again in the PS3 game, and she had to give him 50 bucks for losing to him. But this time, he cheated. He covered her eyes when she was near to winning and obstructed her from seeing the screen.

Joong stopped suddenly causing Jae to crash into him. And she immediately proceeded to try to hit him. But since he was taller than her now, he could hold her head with his hand and push her away while her hands hit frantically into empty air.

Jae: HMPH!!! YOU BULLY!!!

Jae stormed to one side, sat on his bed, and folded her arms and pouted angrily. Joong found her expression very cute. But he didn't say anything.

Joong (matter-of-factly): YOU did the same thing to me when I was younger and shorter than you... Now I'm just returning the favour...

Jae: I'm not speaking to you... Don't talk to me...

Joong: WHAT? Can't I take revenge? If you can do it to a small boy, why can't I do it to you? And you're no longer a small girl... I'm not bullying a child...

Jae: I don't care... That didn't count... I was going to win... And you ruined it... I'm not speaking to you anymore... We're no longer on speaking terms...

Jae turns her head away defiantly.

Joong (giving up): Alright fine... Mianeyo nuna... I apologise for my cheating...

Jae: So you admit you lost?

Joong nodded his head.

Jae: So YOU owe me 50 bucks now!!! Yippee!!!

Jae jumped up from the bed and starting her victory ritual which consisted of jumping around Joong's room and screaming at the top of her voice.

*END OF FLASHBACK*

Chapter 6: Leaving Jae...

Jae's POV:

We had not spoken a word to each other for the entire day.

We just stared at each other in silence.

What was there to say?

We were going to be separated.

By something deadly.

Something that could make our lives much more hell-like miserable.

Something that could end our relationship once and for all.

War.

My loving dad was not excused.

So weren't Joong and Ze. And their dads...

It was a day of immense pain for all womenfolk.

Their beloved had to be called to battle.

War had broken out.

And nowhere was safe from it.

All men were called up to the army to protect their country.

We were standing at the field where chaos and confusion was raging amidst emotional outbursts, as those left behind were bidding those called to battle farewell.

My dad came up to me, and I hugged and kissed him on his cheek.

Jae: Come back safely Daddy... Mummy and I will miss you... We'll be praying for your return every single day...

Jae's Dad: I know Jae... Daddy will miss you two too... I promise I'll take good care of myself, and not get into trouble...

He pulled away from hugging me and went to bid farewell to my Mum.

My eyes went to Ze who was bidding farewell to his granny with his Dad. I stared at him in silence. Then he walked towards me. We did not say a word.

All the commotion and noise were blocked out from us. I couldn’t hear a single thing. My world revolved only around Ze and me. My eyes never left his.

Commander: Gather now men, it’s time to get into the trucks! Hurry up! On the double! Your country awaits your protection!

The commander’s voice echoed through the chaos.

My eyes started to burn with intense hatred.

Why did there ever have to be such a silly thing as war?

No one’s gonna benefit from it.

And everyone’s gonna lose something of importance to them because of it.

Why did it ever have to exist?

I hated it.

I hated it for the chaos and destruction it caused.

I hated it for the casualties it caused.

Most of all, I hated it for taking away my beloved from me.

He spoke for the first time.

Ze: I’ve to go now… The commander’s calling…

Ze said plainly, placing his hand on my face, and started stroking my cheek lovingly.

I didn’t move.

My pride prohibited me from accepting the fact that the very thing that I hated had succeeded in separating me from him.

Ze saw the anger in my eyes. But there was nothing that he could do to make himself be excused from army responsibilities…

To stop all the pain that was piercing my heart every single second…

To stop the despair he felt from being unable to do anything to relieve me of the pain that was hurting me…

Ze: Would you kindly give me a goodbye kiss before I go, my sweet?

Ze whispered softly, forcing himself to maintain his composure in front of me.

I replied by tiptoeing up to meet his lips with mine.

Once my lips touched his, he wrapped his arms around me, pulling me closer. He had wanted to take away my pain by giving me one last kiss. But once we kissed, I ignited the despair he felt. And when I responded to him pulling me closer by wrapping my arms around his neck, his despair turned into mad rage. His lips engulfed mine and his tongue was tightly entwined with mine. He hugged me so tightly until it hurt.

I melted in his arms…

Tears that I had fought to prevent from pouring in front of him started pouring down my face…

I couldn’t endure my pain anymore...

Commander: On the double! Your country awaits your protection!

The commander’s voice echoed through the chaos once again.

He withdrew himself from the passionate yet painful kiss, and took a long look at me, wiping the tears from my cheeks.

Ze: Take good care of yourself when I’m not around. You’re to remain the same when I see you again. Remember, you’re mine. I love you.

He gave me a soft peck on my lips, and pulled himself away and started walking towards the truck.

I stood there in the crowd as I watched him walk away from me. I was dizzy from all the chaos. My tears blurred the image of him as he walked further and further away.

Then I ran towards him. And threw my arms around him. He took my arms and turned around to face me. I leached myself onto him.

Jae: Take good care of yourself too when I’m not around. And you’re to REMAIN the SAME when I see you AGAIN. YOU REMEMBER that YOU’RE MINE... And nothing's supposed to happen to you unless I say so...

And I tilted up to look at him.

There he was. Half smiling. Half crying. Tears were flowing down his face. It was the first time that I saw him cry. He always had sorrowful eyes, but they never seemed to carry enough sorrow to break out into a fulfilling cry. But now I had managed to make them weep. In public. For me.

Ze: I know…

I reached to wipe his face of the tears from his face. He grabbed hold of my hand instead, pulled it to his lips, planted a kiss on it, and then placed it on his face.

Ze: I’ve to go now…

Jae: Wait... I haven’t finished… I’ve missed out something…

His eyes opened wider with curiosity. I reached for his neck with my free hand and pulled his face closer to mine.

Jae: I love you.... Will you be mine forever?

I took out the ring that I had bought for him.

He was totally stunned. Taken aback. And he didn’t answer.

Jae: I know you've already proposed... But I haven't given you a ring yet... If you don’t want it, you can still refuse. It’s just something to keep my mind at ease that you won’t go to other girls when I’m not...

He didn’t answer. He didn’t have to. Cos he gave me the best answer that I could ever think of.

He captured my mouth in his and gave me the most passionate kiss that he had ever given me. And as his lips remained locked onto mine, his hands went down to my knees and swept me up into his arms. Then he spun me round and round in sheer joy.

Ze: I love you.

Jae: Is that a yes?

He nodded blissfully.

Jae: So REMEMBER that you’ve someone waiting for you back home…

I moved closer to his ear, avoiding his gaze, and whispered.

Jae: Waiting for you to… to…

I blushed and decided to rephrase my thoughts.

Jae: To make her the happiest wife in the world…

I looked down shyly.

I felt him turn towards me and his lips beside my ear.

Ze: I’ll definitely put that on my top priority now… my lil’ wifey…

And started putting me down on my feet.

I looked up embarrassingly. He looked into my eyes cheekily, and then his face turned hard again.

Ze: I’ve gotta go now. I’ll give you the most unforgettable wedding when I’m back… Wifey…

Jae: I know… Remember you still owe me... something… I love you… My hubby…

He turned and walked towards the truck.

My eyes followed him but I didn’t move.

Joong's POV:

I watched from the side as Jae-nuna bid goodbye to Ze-hyung. I knew she was hurting the most as two most important men in her life were leaving her at the same day to go to the frontline.

I didn't matter... At least I no longer think I did to her... I just hoped that her pain could be lessened if I didn't matter to her... At least that would mean one less important person was leaving her... I didn't want her to miss me... Worry about my safety... But a part of me craved for her attention and love...

Yuki was hugging me and saying something to me, but my eyes kept staring at Jae-nuna... I didn't register anything Yuki said to me at all...

Joong: Yuki... I got to go now...

Yuki: Joong... Stay safe... I'll wait for you...

I nodded and walked off.

The truth was, I didn't want her to wait for me... I wished that I would perish at the frontline and not have to suffer the pain that I was bearing now in my heart... But as the only son of my parents, I knew I couldn't do something so cruel to them... It wasn't their fault... They didn't deserve to suffer like me... It was the best that I suffered alone and let the rest live on in happiness...

I walked past Jae-nuna, who was looking at Ze-hyung who had already walked to the trucks. There were tears in her beautiful eyes... She was crying...

I wanted so much to hug her and to wipe her tears away... But she didn't even notice me...

I felt a sharp stab in my heart... The pain was too much for me to bear... I hastened my pace and walked on towards the truck...

Jae: Joongie...

My heat stopped when I heard her call my name...

I turned around slowly. She was wiping her tears away with her hands, and forcing a smile on her face when she walked towards me...

She pinched my cheek playfully.

Joong: Nuna!!! What are you doing?!!! Let go of me!!!

I pushed her hand away and rubbed my cheek painfully.

Jae: *giggles* I'll miss you Joongie... Stay safe...

She tip-toed and gave me a hug. My heart stopped for another time when she did it... I couldn't believe it... She was hugging me... Slowly my hands snaked around her back to hug her back... For a moment, I felt the whole world revolve around her and me only...

Jae (whispering into my ear): Remember you still owe me 50 bucks... So you must come back... And pay me back the money...

I smiled. She was so adorable. How can she be thinking of such things at this kind of time? But I knew that it was her way of making the situation less tensed... She wanted to cheer me up... Even though she was feeling even worse than me...

Joong: Araso (I know)... I'll pay you back your money nuna... When I get back... And stop nagging so much... You're already turning into ajumma (old auntie) before you're married...

She hit my head playfully. I pulled away from the hug and pretended to rub my head painfully.

Jae: Naughty boy...

Joong (seriously): I'm not a boy anymore... I'm a man now... Don't call me a boy...

I looked at her seriously and for a while she got a surprise at my reaction. She broke our eye lock and looked down.

Jae: Araso... Just take good care of yourself and your dad... We'll all be waiting for you guys to come back... Safely...

Joong: I will... I got to go now... Bye... Nuna...

I walked away from her.

This was enough... This was all I needed to hear...

She still cared for me...

She would be waiting for me to come back...

My beloved Jae-nuna...

I promise that I would come back safely to her...

Along with her dad, Ze-hyung, his dad, and my dad...

We'll ALL come back safely to her...

I promise...
